Introduction

Ikebana – Japanese art of flower arranging – was established more than 550 years ago. Ikebana used to be treated as displays for emperors and highly ranked individuals in Kyoto and its surroundings.

Available in 3 Levels, 20 Designs in 10 Sessions, HKAFA provides potential students an access into the world of ikebana learning and aims to build a solid foundation in basic Ikenobo Ikebana styles and techniques.

Ikebana is often based on an asymmetrical structure rather than a symmetrical one, yet it is harmonically formed. Additionally, changing angles, size and height enables us to express tranquility and dynamism. We will study Moribana, Nageire and Free style, along with an introduction to Shoka. Students will also experience using a variety of seasonal materials. We will discover the philosophy of this centuries-old craft, the vessels used and arrangement techniques, understand the great importance of seasonality, minimalism and thoughtful placement of stems that is in tune with nature.

Delve into this gentle and important art form and step back from your busy life.

Unwind, connect with nature, and enjoy learning something new.

Suitable for complete beginners to those more experienced.

About the Class

We will present students with a handout covering the design of each class, including botanical names of the flowers and foliages used in both English & Chinese, sketches and sample photos (when applicable) to assist learning. Our Instructor will kick start each class with a detailed explanation, following a step-by-step teaching method to ensure students develop the necessary applicable techniques and skills.

Guided by our experienced instructors every step of the way with feedback as you focus on the building blocks of the craft and establishing a strong foundation of floral know-how. Everything you make is yours to take home – which will be another learning opportunity to observe different flowers and foliages’ full character and vase life.
